What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the enlargement of male breast tissue, often resulting in a feminized chest appearance. This condition can significantly affect confidence and body image. It may be caused by an excess of fatty tissue, enlarged glandular tissue, loose skin—or a combination of all three.

Gynecomastia is commonly classified into four grades, based on the size and severity of breast enlargement and skin excess:

  1. Grade I – Small, localized tissue without excess skin.
  2. Grade II – Moderate enlargement, with or without minor skin redundancy.
  3. Grade III – Moderate to significant enlargement with excess skin.
  4. Grade IV – Severe breast enlargement resembling a feminine chest with nipple ptosis (sagging).

What Is Male Breast Reduction Surgery?

Male breast reduction is a customized procedure designed to flatten and contour the chest. Depending on the gynecomastia grade, treatment may involve liposuction, glandular tissue removal, skin tightening, or a combination of these techniques.

Treatment by Grade:

  • Grade I:
    Small periareolar incision for gland excision
  • Grade II:
    VASER-assisted liposuction ± gland removal
  • Grade III:
    Liposuction + circumareolar skin tightening or vertical scar technique
  • Grade IV:
    Full surgical excision (mastectomy) with horizontal scars on each side of the chest
    (No vertical scar needed)
