What is body Liposuction and Liposculpturing?

Some areas of the body don’t respond well to traditional weight loss. Liposuction is a popular procedure for removing unwanted fat from various body areas, including the abdomen, back, love handles, outer and inner thighs, calves, upper arms, and buttocks.

Fat cells are distributed throughout the body early in life, as determined by the person’s genetics. Fat cells can’s multiply or migrate, and once removed they cannot come back. Therefore, any contour improvement achieved by liposuction is a permanent improvement that will persist for life, even if the patient gains weight.

Liposuction and Liposculpture are two interchangeable words for almost the same meaning;

Liposuction refers to the removal of excess body fat by suctioning leading to the highlighting of the attractive body curves and slimmer contours similar to the sculpturing of a beautiful statue (Liposculpturing).

Liposculpturing however could imply to the use of 3D Liposuction techniques in which some small details are being sculptured prominent during the liposuction for example some abdominal lines are sculptured to reflect the abdominal muscle prominences, or six pack full details sculpturing.

What is Vaser?

Virtually any area of your body that contains stubborn fat deposits can be treated by liposuction. In most cases, patients seek out liposuction to help reshape the following areas:

  • Double chin
  • Arms
  • Chest in men
  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Flanks “love handles”
  • Buttocks
  • Inner thighs & knees
  • Outer thighs
  • Calves (legs)
  • Face

More than one area of your body can be treated in a single procedure.

how many areas could be treated in a single procedure?

Most of the time it is usually three areas of liposuction done in a single procedure; but however any number of areas could be managed in the same procedure.

Who is a candidate for liposuction?

Men and women who desire to reshape their body appearance and improve the contour of any area are potential candidates for liposuction.

Areas of liposuction include:

  • Abdomen
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Love handles
  • Inner thighs
  • Outer thighs
  • Arms
  • Buttocks
  • Legs

Liposuction availability depends on the amount of excess fat that needs to be removed and the degree of skin laxity and elasticity.

Could liposuction make me lose much weight?

Liposuction procedure in general doesn’t cause much weight loss; it is more concerned about body carving and body reshaping rather than body weight. It is more about how you look in the mirror and what is the size of your clothes, rather than how much you weigh on the scale.

Fat is lighter than water, thus removing much fat doesn’t necessarily mean losing a lot of weight, it is specifically true in the early post operative period in which fat is being replaced by heavier fluids that cause the swelling that normally occur after liposuction.

There might be some weight gain on the scale in the early post operative period; however the fluids should normally be removed later on by your body as the swelling starts to disappear few weeks after the procedure, and the scale starts to show some body weight loss that doesn’t exceed 5 Kgs. (11 pounds) in most of the cases.

Abdominal liposuction vs. Abdominoplasty (Tummy tuck) for abdominal contouring:

Both liposuction and tummy tuck surgery are effective procedures for abdominal contouring, however these 2 different techniques also have some important distinctions.

Liposuction is primarily designed to remove excess fat that has developed in certain areas, such as the bellies. Tummy tuck surgery focuses on the removal of excess saggy redundant skin that usually forms as a result of pregnancy, weight loss, or liposuction.

Liposuction procedure is not designed to treat any skin laxity in the abdomen, not even with the use of skin tightening devices like the Vaser. Vaser liposuction alone is a perfect choice for patients that don’t have any skin sagging in the abdomen.

For some other patients that have both excess fat and abdominal skin sagging, tummy tuck is a necessary surgery that has to be combined with liposuction in the same procedure (lipo-abdominoplasty) in order to remove the excess loose skin together with the excess fat in one procedure.

Picture showing an example of redundant skin and excess fat suitable for lipo-abdominoplasty On the other hand abdominoplasty alone is the perfect choice for patients that have abdominal skin sagging without any fat pockets to be removed.

How is Vaser liposuction procedure performed?

Vaser liposuction procedure is a very safe and common procedure that requires only 3 – 5 mm (less than 0.5cm) incisions to the skin leaving no any visible scars after healing.

It is usually done under general anaesthesia in most cases but in some selective patients local anaesthesia could also be used. It usually takes from 1 – 3 hours depending only on how many areas to be treated.

The tumescent technique which is the gold standard of liposuction is being used in all cases. A dilute solution of local anaesthetic (Lidocaine) and epinephrine is injected to the targeted areas prior to the use of Vaser or suctioning in order to control the blood loss that normally occurs with the procedure.

The Vaser is then used next to break down fat cells safely by emulsifying it before doing the suction in order to further reduce the blood loss that normally occurs with the liposuction procedure.

Superficial Vaser skin tightening is being used next in order to tighten the skin by stimulating its collagen to shrink thus preventing the skin laxity and sagging that could result from traditional liposuction without using Vaser.

Body fat suctioning and body carving comes as the last step of the procedure, removing all the unwanted fat and sculpturing the body curves to come out with the final result of a beautiful curvy body with slim contours and nicely toned skin.

Is it possible to use the fat to augment other body areas?

Liposuction procedure could be easily combined with natural fat transfer to any body area that requires enhancement.

What are the areas that could be enhanced with a natural fat transfer during a Liposuction procedure?

Any body area that requires fat volume enhancement could be combined with liposuction in the same procedure, however the most common areas of natural fat transfer include:

  1. The face
  2. Back of the hands
  3. The breasts
  4. Buttocks (BBL)
  5. Hips
  6. Calves
  7. The anklet area
  8. Labia majora

Liposuction recovery and what to expect from liposuction:

Liposuction incisions are less than 0.5 cm and typically heal inconspicuously.

Early walking after the procedure is highly encouraged.

Pain killers in the form of patches, pills, and some times intramuscular injections totally alleviate pain.

Body swelling (edema) that result from high fluid injection and the liposuction procedure should be expected in all cases and highly varies according to few different factors:

  • The area of treatment e.g. the thighs remain swollen (edematous) for a longer period than back or abdomen.
  • Presence or absence of drains.
  • Commitment to the use of oral medications.
  • Commitment to the use of compression garment.
  • The extent of the procedure (complete / partial fat removal)
  • The amount of fluids injected prior to liposuction
  • Early movement

Compression garment is required for 30 days after the procedure.

Most patients need about 2 weeks off work, 4 weeks before going to the Gym., and 6 weeks for full recovery.

End results are expected after at least 4 months but however you can see much of your new shape as soon as the swelling starts to disappear about 2 – 6 weeks.
