What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery or an eyelid lift, is a cosmetic procedure designed to rejuvenate the upper and/or lower eyelids. Over time, the skin around the eyes can lose elasticity, causing sagging, wrinkles, and the appearance of puffiness or “bags” due to bulging fat pads and weakened muscles.

Blepharoplasty helps restore a youthful, refreshed look by removing excess skin and fat, tightening the eyelids, and enhancing the natural contour of the eyes.

  • Upper blepharoplasty focuses on lifting sagging upper eyelids
  • Lower blepharoplasty targets under-eye bags and loose skin beneath the eyes

This procedure is both functional and aesthetic—improving vision in some cases while creating a more alert, rested appearance.

Complementary Procedures with Blepharoplasty

To achieve the most harmonious and rejuvenated results, blepharoplasty is often combined with other facial procedures. These may include:

  • Brow Lift: Performed alongside upper blepharoplasty using the same incision, a brow lift helps raise drooping eyebrows and smooth the forehead for a more open, youthful eye area.
  • Midface Lift: Often paired with lower blepharoplasty, this technique addresses sagging midfacial fat beneath the lower eyelids, improving the contour between the eyes and cheeks.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

You may be a candidate for eyelid surgery if you have:

  • Visible signs of aging around the eyes
  • Loose, sagging eyelid skin
  • Fine lines or deep wrinkles on the upper or lower eyelids
  • Puffy bags under the eyes
  • Upper eyelid hooding that affects your vision
  • A tired or aged appearance despite feeling well-rested
  • Drooping midfacial fat or sagging eyebrows

Blepharoplasty is suitable for both men and women looking to enhance the eye area and achieve a more refreshed, youthful appearance.

Blepharoplasty Recovery

Recovery from blepharoplasty is generally smooth and well-tolerated:

  • Most patients experience only mild to moderate discomfort, easily managed with over-the-counter medication
  • Swelling and bruising are expected and usually subside within 7 to 10 days
  • Non-absorbable sutures are removed between days 5 and 7
  • For traveling patients; absorbable sutures are used and do not require removal
  • The incision line heals well by day 10 and fades gradually over the next 6 months until it becomes virtually unnoticeable

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Upper blepharoplasty targets excess skin and fat in the upper eyelids, often to correct hooded eyes or improve visual obstruction.

Lower blepharoplasty focuses on removing or repositioning fat under the eyes to reduce puffiness and excise excess skin to smooth fine wrinkles.

Yes. Blepharoplasty is often performed alongside facelift, brow lift, or non-surgical treatments like Botox or dermal fillers for comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

The surgery typically takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on whether both upper and lower eyelids are being treated and whether it's performed under local anesthesia or sedation.

Most patients experience swelling and bruising for the first 7 days. Stitches are usually removed within 5 – 7 days. Most people return to normal activities within 10 to 14 days, although complete healing may take a few weeks.

Blepharoplasty incisions are strategically placed to ensure minimal visibility.

For upper eyelid surgery, the incision is hidden within the natural crease of the upper eyelid, making the scar virtually undetectable once healed.

In lower eyelid surgery, the incision can be made inside the eyelid (transconjunctival approach), leaving no external scar, or just below the lash line, where it is well camouflaged.

After full healing, scars are typically faint to nearly invisible.

Results are long-lasting. While surgery won’t stop the natural aging process, most patients enjoy a more youthful appearance for many years. Upper eyelid surgery may last 10–15 years, while lower eyelid results are typically permanent.

Yes. When performed by a skilled plastic surgeon, blepharoplasty yields subtle, natural-looking results that enhance the eyes without looking overdone or "surprised."

You can typically resume wearing eye makeup after about 10–14 days, once the incisions have healed. Contact lenses may be worn after 2 weeks, but it’s best to consult your surgeon for personalized guidance.
