What is Abdominoplasty (Tummy tuck)?

Pregnancy and weight loss both usually impact the abdominal area negatively, leaving the individual with loose excess skin creating a sagging appearance at the lower belly. Pregnancy in addition causes weak abdominal wall muscles creating a “belly pooch”.

A tummy tuck is a plastic surgical procedure that involves removal of excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen, tightening the lax abdominal wall muscles, and giving you a more defined flat abdomen.

Abdominoplasty is often to be combined with liposuction contouring of the upper abdomen and flanks “the love handles” (lipo-abdominoplasty).

What are the benefits of a tummy tuck?

Tummy tuck is one of the most popular surgeries in the plastic cosmetic surgery field. It can provide numerous advantages to both women and men who are trying to get a flat, fitting abdomen. The potential benefits of tummy tuck surgery include:

  • Tightening abdominal wall muscles and repair of abdominal diastasis
  • Repair of a midline hernias if present.
  • Removal of excess abdominal skin.
  • Removal of excess fat pockets (Lipo-abdominoplasty).
  • Abdominal rejuvenation after weight loss or pregnancy.
  • Reduction in the appearance of stretch marks which are excised with the excess skin.

Who is a candidate for a tummy tuck?

Both men and women who desire to improve the shape, appearance, and the contour of their abdomen, and have skin laxity that needs to be addressed make potential candidates to a tummy tuck procedure. There are different causes for abdominal skin laxity that include:

  • Weight loss
  • Pregnancy
  • Previous bariatric surgery
  • Previous belly liposuction

It is important to mention that tummy tuck is not a tool for weight loss. Candidates to this operation should be at or near the ideal weight and only expect to have a flat tight abdominal shape.

What is the meaning of a mini-tummy tuck?

Mini-tummy tuck or mini-abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves removal of excess skin from the lower abdomen without tightening to the abdominal wall musculature or the skin above the belly button. It best suits those who are undergoing liposuction with some minor degrees of skin laxity or some women with limited skin excess below the belly button for any other reason.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy tuck) vs. abdominal liposuction for abdominal contouring:

Both tummy tuck surgery and liposuction are effective procedures for abdominal contouring, however they are distinct in many ways:

Liposuction is primarily designed to remove excess fat that has developed in certain areas, such as the bellies, but is not designed to treat any skin laxity in the abdomen.

Tummy tuck surgery on the other hand focuses on the removal of excess saggy redundant skin that usually forms as a result of pregnancy, weight loss, or liposuction.

For some patients that have both excess fat and abdominal skin sagging, tummy tuck and liposuction are done in the same procedure (lipo-abdominoplasty) in order to remove the excess loose skin together with the excess fat in one procedure.

How tummy tuck scars look like?

Full tummy tuck surgeries typically require an incision from hip to hip (just above the pubic hair region), as well as an incision to release the navel during the procedure.

The main incision is similar to that of a C-section but is much longer running from one hip in one side to the other.

The scar can usually be concealed well under clothes and swimwear, and it is sutured subtly that in most cases only leaves a very thin white line 6 – 12 months after surgery.

Silicone patches could offer some additional help if needed.

Recovery from tummy tuck:

It is not a highly painful procedure, pain killers in the form of patches, pills, and some times intramuscular injections totally alleviate pain.

Body swelling (edema) should be expected in all cases and highly varies according to some different factors:

  • Absence or the presence of liposuction (lipo-abdominoplasty).
  • Absence or presence of drains.
  • Commitment to the use of oral medications.
  • Commitment to the use of compression garment.
  • The extent of the procedure.
  • Early movement.

Drains (small plastic tubes) are usually required in tummy tuck to drain any remaining fluids after the procedure and are usually removed by the 7th – 10th day.

The sutures used are usually self dissolvable that needn’t be removed any time later, however if the non dissolvable sutures are used they are removed by the 10th – 14th day after surgery.

Compression garment is required for 30 days after the procedure.

Early walking after the procedure is highly encouraged.

The position of the bed’s back should be raised to 45 degrees during the 1st 2 weeks after the procedure.

Most patients need about 2 weeks off work, 4 weeks before going to the Gym., and 6 weeks for full recovery.

End results are expected after at least 4 months but however you can see much of your new shape as soon as the swelling starts to disappear about 2 weeks after the procedure.
