What Is Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)?

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a body contouring procedure designed to remove excess abdominal skin and fat while tightening the underlying muscles. It’s especially beneficial for individuals who have experienced pregnancy, significant weight loss, or abdominal surgeries that have left them with sagging skin or muscle separation (diastasis recti).

This surgery not only flattens the abdomen but also enhances your waistline and helps restore a more youthful, toned appearance. In many cases, abdominoplasty is combined with liposuction of the upper abdomen and flanks (love handles) in what’s known as a lipo-abdominoplasty, to achieve optimal contouring results.

Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck offers multiple aesthetic and functional benefits:

  • Tightens weakened or separated abdominal muscles
  • Removes excess, sagging abdominal skin
  • Eliminates stubborn fat pockets when combined with liposuction
  • Enhances abdominal contour after weight loss or pregnancy
  • Improves posture by strengthening the core
  • Reduces stretch marks (particularly those located on the lower abdomen)

What Is a Mini Tummy Tuck?

A mini-abdominoplasty addresses mild to moderate skin laxity below the belly button without repositioning the navel or tightening the upper abdominal muscles. It’s ideal for individuals with limited excess skin in the lower abdomen—often following liposuction or minor weight changes.

Am I a Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

You may be a suitable candidate for a tummy tuck if:

  • You have loose or sagging skin following pregnancy, weight loss, or previous abdominal surgery
  • You’re at or near your ideal body weight
  • You’re in good general health and have realistic expectations
  • You’re not planning future pregnancies, which can affect results

Please note: A tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure—it’s a body contouring surgery meant to improve shape and tone.

Tummy Tuck vs. Abdominal Liposuction

While both procedures can enhance your abdominal appearance, they serve different purposes:

  • Liposuction targets excess fat deposits but doesn’t address loose skin or weakened muscles.
  • Abdominoplasty removes excess skin, tightens muscles, and may include liposuction for optimal contouring.

For patients with both excess skin and fat, lipo-abdominoplasty offers the most comprehensive result.

What to Expect with Tummy Tuck Scarring

A full tummy tuck typically involves:

  • A horizontal incision extending from hip to hip (placed low enough to be hidden under most clothing and swimwear)
  • A small incision around the navel to reposition it naturally

Scars are carefully placed and closed to heal as discreetly as possible. With proper care—including silicone scar therapy—most scars fade into thin, light lines over time.

Recovery After Tummy Tuck Surgery

  • Pain & Discomfort: Generally described as moderate. Controlled with prescribed oral medications, patches, or injections.
  • Swelling (Edema): Common after surgery and varies based on procedure extent and use of liposuction.
  • Drains: Small drainage tubes are typically placed and removed within 7–10 days.
  • Stitches: Usually dissolvable. If non-absorbable sutures are used, they are removed within 10–14 days.
  • Compression Garment: Must be worn for 4 weeks to support healing and minimize swelling.
  • Activity:
    • Early walking is encouraged.
    • The upper body should remain elevated at 45° during the first 2 weeks.
    • Return to work: 2–3 weeks.
    • Gym/Exercise: Resume after 4 weeks.
    • Full recovery: 6–8 weeks.

Final Results: Most patients begin seeing visible improvement after 2–3 weeks as swelling subsides, with full results emerging after about 4 months.
